David DeBolt was my first bassoon teacher and one of the most incredible individuals I have ever met. Dave had an extraordinary love for music that was truly contagious. My lessons with him not only taught me the technical aspects of playing the bassoon, but also opened doors, showing me both the individual and communal nature of music-making. His encouragement was a primary force in my decision to pursue music as a career.

Dave approached life with a sense of energy and genuine appreciation that was unmistakable. He embodied a deeply human spirit, full of kindness and generosity toward everyone he met. I spent many summers visiting him at his home, often drawn back by the invitation of a wonderfully home-cooked meal. We would sit for hours in conversation about life, music, and reed-making. I would play for him, and we would play duets together. It was clear he saw me not just as a student, but as a friend.

We stayed in touch regularly through email, and he always took an interest in my “adventures in life,” as he liked to call them. Since his passing, I’ve found that his voice is still with me, both musically and personally. The way he taught, the way he thought, and the way he lived continue to shape me. I carry a deep reverence for the life he led, and I feel so incredibly grateful to have known him.
